German Defence Minister proposes buying 16 new A400M transport aircraft
Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said Germany is considering replacing 16 older A400M planes with new tactical versions, pending parliamentary approval.
At an Airbus plant in Bremen, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius revealed that Germany is seriously evaluating the purchase of 16 new Airbus A400M transport aircraft to replace a subset of its existing fleet. The 16 older machines are limited to logistical tasks and do not have combat-ready systems like missile protection, prompting the minister to argue that the altered security situation calls for a reassessment. The Bundeswehr currently operates 53 A400Ms, and the proposed addition would bring the total of fully equipped tactical aircraft up.
Pistorius estimated the overall expense at about one billion euros. He emphasized that the upgrade would markedly boost the air force's readiness, but any final decision must await the Bundestag's consent.
