German Embassy Declares It Will Remain in Kyiv Despite Russian Threats
The German embassy in Kyiv said it will stay in the capital, joining other missions that reject Russian warnings to evacuate.
The German embassy in Ukraine posted on Facebook that it, together with other diplomatic missions in Kyiv, is concerned about recent threats from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs aimed at diplomats and foreign citizens. It emphasized that Russia is bound by the Vienna Convention and international humanitarian law, and declared that the German mission will continue operating in Kyiv. Ukrainian officials rejected reports that unnamed Western embassies intended to relocate to Lviv or further west into Poland.
The EU ambassador confirmed that the EU delegation, its advisory mission, and EU member-state embassies will stay put, while the Polish foreign ministry said its Kyiv embassy's operations will not change. Estonia also pledged to keep its embassy in Kyiv, and Italy announced its intention to remain in the capital despite the threats.
