German foreign minister urges stronger pressure on Russia ahead of UN summit
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Germany will push for tougher action against Russia’s war and hybrid attacks as he heads to the UN General Assembly.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that Germany will intensify efforts to compel Russia to negotiate an end to its war in Ukraine as he prepares to attend the 81st UN General Assembly. He stressed that UN debates must translate into actionable measures, not just a review of ongoing conflicts. Wadephul cited Russia’s escalating attacks on civilian infrastructure, repeated airspace breaches, and sabotage of undersea cables, urging partners to safeguard critical maritime infrastructure and counter the shadow-fleet tankers operating near Europe.
He also drew attention to Iran’s interference with trade routes in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, which hampers energy, fertilizer and aid deliveries worldwide, especially for vulnerable nations in the Global South. The minister said Germany will work with allies to strengthen Ukraine’s resilience and to assume greater responsibility for global maritime security. On the sidelines of the UN session, he plans meetings with G7 leaders to deepen international partnerships.
Why it matters
The statements signal Germany’s intent to shape a tougher international stance on Russia and broader maritime security risks.
