German investigators uncover third drone and suspected explosives linked to Leipzig/Halle airport incident
Authorities in Germany have located a second unmanned aircraft and a cache of material thought to be the military explosive hexogen, tied to the recent attempted attack on Leipzig/Halle airport.
German police discovered a third unmanned aerial vehicle near Leipzig/Halle airport on August 14, adding to the evidence from the earlier attempted sabotage. Alongside the drone, investigators recovered roughly 50 grams of a material they suspect to be the military explosive hexogen. Officials suspect the operation may have been directed by Russian intelligence, an allegation that Moscow has rejected.
The airport, which serves NATO and Ukraine's Antonov Airlines for military shipments, was temporarily closed after an explosives-filled drone was found near a Ukrainian cargo plane on August 4. A separate drone is believed to have struck a DHL cargo aircraft shortly after the shutdown. The prosecutor general's office has not yet commented on the findings.
