German left parties push for full reparations and land return to Herero and Nama descendants
The Bundestag’s left faction has tabled a resolution demanding comprehensive recognition of the German colonial atrocities in Namibia and immediate reparations for Herero and Nama descendants.
The left parliamentary group in the Bundestag has introduced a resolution demanding a complete acknowledgment of the alleged German genocide against the OvaHerero and Nama in Namibia, along with immediate reparations for the tribes’ descendants. It proposes a novel reparative justice framework that would prioritize the return of land, territories, cultural artifacts and human remains over conventional development assistance.
The Greens’ accompanying amendment calls for the repatriation of remains taken from Namibia, financial support for the upkeep of victims’ graves in Swakopmund, and German advocacy within the EU to relax visa requirements for Namibians. The draft will be debated on Thursday night. Germany previously recognized the colonial actions as genocide in 2021, a step that did not create legal compensation claims, prompting criticism from Herero and Nama leadership. The historical context includes German colonial rule in present-day Namibia and the suppression of uprisings between 1904 and 1908.
