Klaus-Michael Kuehne, the 89-year-old billionaire who steered Kuehne + Nagel from a family freight forwarder to a global logistics powerhouse, has died, the company announced. A grandson of co-founder August Kuehne, he also owned significant interests in Lufthansa, Hapag-Lloyd, chemicals trader Brenntag and mobility provider Flix. His net assets are valued at over $44.2 billion by Forbes, placing him among Germany’s wealthiest investors.
Kuehne served as CEO from 1975 and chaired the board between 1992 and 2011, later orchestrating a consortium to buy Hapag-Lloyd’s container business in 2008 and securing a 20% voting stake in Lufthansa.
