German man arrested for stealing gold bars hidden in woman's garden in Somogy

Police captured a 62-year-old German suspect accused of taking gold bars that a woman had buried in her Somogy garden.

A special deployment team of the Somogy county police arrested a 62-year-old German national suspected of stealing investment gold bars that a local woman had hidden in her garden. The woman, who had purchased 64 gold bars for over ten thousand euros, buried 22 of them on her property in the summer of 2025 and later engaged an acquaintance to construct a garden pond, during which she pointed out the exact locations of the buried bars and warned him to avoid that area.

After learning that a man who had worked on her property had sold a large quantity of gold at a Kaposvár dealer the previous year, she checked the buried cache and found it gone. Police linked the disappearance to the German suspect, who was apprehended on October 15 at his residence, where cash was also recovered. A video of the arrest was released by authorities.
