German Man Detained for Attempted Islamic State Training Abroad

A 21-year-old German citizen has been placed in pre-trial detention after authorities say he tried to join the Islamic State overseas.

A German man, 21, is being held in investigative custody after a federal judge in Karlsruhe activated a detention warrant, according to the Bundesanwaltschaft. The suspect is accused of planning to travel from Berlin to Ethiopia in January 2025 with the aim of reaching Somalia to receive combat training from the Islamic State. He never arrived in Somalia; instead, he proceeded to Pakistan, where he was apprehended in February 2025.

Prosecutors allege attempted membership in a foreign terrorist organization and preparation of a serious state-endangering violent act, offenses that German law defines as leaving the country to join or be trained by such groups. The Bundesanwaltschaft, led by Generalbundesanwalt Jens Rommel since March 2024, is the primary authority for terrorism and related crimes in Germany.

Why it matters

It shows Germany's active pursuit of citizens attempting to join foreign terrorist groups.
