German police detain Russian hacker linked to fatal NHS cyberattack
German authorities have arrested a Russian man suspected of aiding the Qilin group in a cyberattack that disrupted London hospitals and led to one patient’s death.
German officials have seized a 28-year-old Russian citizen, Vlagyimir K., accused of participating in the Qilin hacker group’s operation against the British National Health Service’s London hospitals in June 2024. The breach compromised hospital systems, delaying many medical interventions, especially blood transfusions, and necessitating the relocation of some cases to unaffected facilities. One patient died as a result of the disruption.
The suspect had previously been detained in Japan during a vacation and was monitored by German authorities before his arrest. British investigators are assessing whether charges of homicide can be applied, marking an unprecedented legal approach to a cyberattack. The Qilin group has been linked to thousands of attacks since 2024, extracting large sums of money from victims.
