German postal service proposes 20-cent hike for standard letters in 2027
Deutsche Post plans to raise the price of its standard letter by 20 cents starting early 2027, pending regulator approval.
Deutsche Post announced that, from the beginning of 2027, the standard letter will cost €1.15, a rise of 20 cents, and the compact letter will be priced at €1.25. The carrier cites a steady decline in letter traffic combined with higher personnel, energy and material expenses as the main drivers of the change. It also highlights ongoing investments in the postal and parcel network, such as electric vehicles and new parcel lockers, to maintain nationwide service coverage.
Nikola Hagleitner, a board member responsible for Post & Paket Germany at DHL, explained that fewer letters increase the cost per item. The price adjustment still awaits approval from the Bundesnetzagentur, which will decide whether the increase can be implemented.
Why it matters
Higher mail costs will affect households and businesses that still rely on traditional letters.
