German prosecutor charges Syrian supporter in 2025 Berlin Holocaust memorial attack
Federal prosecutors have indicted 37-year-old Syrian Khalaf A. for aiding and encouraging the 2025 knife attack on a Spanish tourist at Berlin’s Holocaust memorial.
About a year and a half after the anti-Semitic assault at Berlin’s Holocaust memorial, the Bundesanwaltschaft has brought a criminal case against Khalaf A., a 37-year-old Syrian, accusing him of facilitating attempted murder and serious injury. Prosecutors say Khalaf A. encountered the assailant, Wassim al-M., shortly before the February 2025 incident and encouraged the attack. Al-M., then 19, used a knife on a Spanish tourist he mistakenly thought was Jewish, inflicting a neck wound that threatened the victim’s life.
Police apprehended al-M. that night, and in March 2026 the Berliner Kammergericht sentenced him to 13 years for attempted murder and for trying to join the Islamic State abroad. Khalaf A. is currently held in investigative custody pending trial. The case underscores the German authorities’ focus on prosecuting both perpetrators and those who enable extremist violence.
