At the former Biblis nuclear power station in Germany, Focused Energy intends to erect the world’s first commercial laser-fusion power plant, repurposing the existing reactor dome and grid links. Vice President Ulrich Sigel outlined an ambitious timeline: a demonstrator in five years, a pilot facility in ten, and a fully competitive plant in fifteen. The venture is supported by a €60 million investment from RWE and a record-breaking $240 million first-round financing, reflecting growing venture interest in laser-fusion.
Expected capacity approaches one gigawatt, sufficient for two million homes, but the technology faces significant challenges in fuel cycles and scaling. While the German government and EU prioritize fusion research, skeptics argue the approach is still too expensive and technically immature.
