German startup scene hits record with surge in unicorns and AI-driven growth
Germany's startup ecosystem added ten new unicorns by late September, raising the total to a record 39, driven by AI and defence tech investments.
According to the Deutsche Start-up Monitor released in Berlin, ten firms achieved billion-euro valuations by the end of September, pushing Germany's total unicorn tally to a record 39. The surge reflects heightened venture capital activity, notably in artificial-intelligence ventures—over half of surveyed startups now centre their products on AI—and in defence companies like Quantum Systems and Helsing. New entrants include software firm Osapiens, robotics specialist Neura Robotics and defence contractor Stark Defense.
Despite the influx of funds, the report notes that financing is becoming more top-heavy, with fewer rounds for mid-size firms compared with 2021. Founders overwhelmingly demand more venture capital from Germany and Europe, and most prefer to list abroad, with 62 % eyeing U.S. markets. The startup association urges the government to implement its start-up strategy, ease financing, and adopt the EU Inc. legal form, while highlighting the strong link between startups and research institutions.
Why it matters
The boom signals Germany's growing role in high-tech and defence sectors, affecting jobs, investment and global competitiveness.
