German-Ukrainian marketer charged with spying for Russian embassy
German prosecutors have charged Ilona W., a Berlin-based marketer and lobby chair, with aiding a Russian intelligence officer by supplying event tips and recruiting defence contacts.
Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office announced charges against Ilona W., a dual German-Ukrainian citizen who runs a marketing agency and chairs a lobbying group in Berlin. Prosecutors allege she has been in regular contact with a full-time intelligence officer at the Russian Embassy in Berlin since at least Oct. 2023. She allegedly supplied the officer with numerous tips on high-profile military and political events and facilitated his attendance, occasionally using false names, to expand his intelligence network.
In addition, she is accused of attending such events herself to identify contacts and potential targets, and of attempting to recruit personnel from the German Ministry of Defence and the defence industry for Russian purposes. The investigation focused on her efforts to gather information on German defence policy amid Russia’s war on Ukraine. Ilona W. was arrested in January, and the indictment was filed on Sept. 6; she continues to be held in pre-trial detention.
