German war-conscientious objection applications surge ahead of new draft law
Applications to refuse military service in Germany have risen sharply this year, outpacing the total from the previous year.
Since the start of the year, the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks has received a markedly higher number of war-service refusal applications than in the entire previous year. This surge aligns with a tense security environment and the enactment of a new law that mandates a draft for young men beginning in 2027, aiming to expand the armed forces. The office warns that a large share of the recent filings are improperly completed and are being sent back unopened.
It also highlights the prevalence of false claims circulating online regarding how and what to submit. The underlying legislation keeps the right to conscientious objection under Article 4 § 3 of the Basic Law, even though the general conscription remains suspended. If recruitment targets are missed, the Bundestag could invoke a conditional service requirement.
