Germany inaugurates drone security research hub in Saxony-Anhalt

A new drone research centre opened in Saxony-Anhalt, attended by interior and research ministers and the state premier, to develop security technologies after a recent Leipzig airport drone incident.

On Tuesday, the German Aerospace Center’s campus in Cochstedt, just south of Magdeburg, officially opened a new drone research centre, with Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Research and Technology Minister Dorothee Bär and Saxony-Anhalt premier Sven Schulze presiding over the ceremony. The facility is designed to merge scientific theory with the practical demands of Germany’s security services, allowing realistic testing of emerging anti-drone technologies.

Its establishment follows a recent incident at Leipzig airport where an explosive-laden drone was discovered close to Ukrainian cargo aircraft, an event prosecutors labelled a serious attack on transport and logistics infrastructure. An interior-ministry spokeswoman highlighted the need for extensive research, development and observation to boost Germany’s anti-drone capabilities, especially against AI-controlled drones that can evade jamming signals.

Accurate identification of different drone models is also a priority to apply the most effective defensive measures. The centre is expected to become a key component of the nation’s broader effort to keep pace with the evolving drone arms race.

Why it matters

Strengthening anti-drone defenses safeguards Germany’s transport and logistics networks from emerging aerial threats.
