Germany plans new naval base in Emden as fleet expansion accelerates
The German navy will build a new military harbour in Emden to accommodate additional ships and personnel, with construction slated for the early 2030s.
Germany is set to create a new naval base in Emden, covering as much as 450 hectares, to support the growing fleet and provide additional housing and training facilities. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius highlighted the requirement for extra berths for new ships and expanded accommodation for service members. The base will eventually house modern frigates, support ships and related logistics units, with the first Meko-200 (F128) frigate scheduled for delivery in 2029 after parliamentary funding approval.
The shift to the smaller, proven Meko-200 design follows the termination of the ambitious F126 project, which suffered from software problems and cost overruns. Parallel plans include upgrading existing Baden-Württemberg-class frigates with advanced missile systems and procuring fast patrol boats for the naval infantry. The overall effort reflects a broader strategy to modernise Germany’s maritime capabilities.
Why it matters
The new base will bolster Germany's naval readiness and support its shift to modern, cost-effective warships.
