Germany plans new navy base in Emden as part of multi-billion maritime project
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Lower Saxony Premier Olaf Lies signed a declaration to build a new naval harbor in Emden, reviving a former base closed in 1997.
Boris Pistorius and Olaf Lies formalised an intent to develop a new naval harbor in Emden, restoring a presence that was eliminated in March 1997. The new facility will give the German Navy a second North Sea base, complementing Wilhelmshaven and enhancing rapid Atlantic deployment. Officials highlighted Emden's ample space, maritime tradition, and proximity to the high-latitude Atlantic as key advantages.
The project, slated for completion in the early 2030s, is expected to involve a multi-billion euro outlay and generate numerous civilian jobs in construction and support services. Emden’s mayor, Tim Kruithoff, was absent, attending a cruise for his parents' golden wedding, while councilor Horst Jahnke signed the declaration and praised the occasion as historic.
