Germany sends staff and aircraft to joint Ukraine peace-force drill in Poland

The Bundeswehr will join the first multinational exercise of the Ukraine peace-force, contributing staff officers, transport planes and logistical support in a drill scheduled for November in Poland and surrounding airspace.

Germany has confirmed participation in the inaugural training of the Ukraine peace-force, sending roughly ten staff officers, up to two A400M transport planes for aerial refuelling and logistical assistance. The exercise, called "Koalition 2026," will be held in November on Polish territory and in the airspace above Romania and the western Black Sea. The manoeuvre was first agreed at a July summit in Paris and later publicised by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who said it will prepare concrete security guarantees for Ukraine and the region.

The multinational force, led by France and the United Kingdom, was established earlier this year to secure any future cease-fire or peace agreement. While Germany initially hesitated, the defence ministry now frames its involvement as a sign of solidarity with partners, though the exact size of the German contribution remains to be decided by the government and parliament.

Why it matters

The drill tests a multinational force that could enforce a cease-fire in the Ukraine conflict, showing allied coordination.
