Germany to expand drone defence and cyber shield after Leipzig airport attack

After an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said Germany expects a rise in hybrid assaults involving explosive UAVs, cyber attacks and sabotage. He outlined a protection plan that will station quickly deployable units around key cities—including Frankfurt/Main, München, Hamburg, Berlin, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Hannover and Köln—to secure airspace over airports, train stations and the Berlin government district.
The strategy expands drone interception duties beyond the Bundespolizei to include water utilities, power providers and defence manufacturers, granting them powers to not only detect but also actively disable hostile drones. In parallel, a national "Cyberdome" will be built, consisting of a dense mesh of digital sensors designed to spot and thwart hacker attempts on public and private networks. The measures aim to create a comprehensive shield against both physical and digital threats.
