Giannis Kakleas outlines radical, class-focused vision for Athens’ Theatre Warehouse
Director Giannis Kakleas, newly appointed artistic head of Theatre Warehouse, discussed his plan to turn the venue into a hub for politically charged, experimental theatre.
In an interview at the Theatre Warehouse on Sarri street in Psyrrhi, Giannis Kakleas announced his new role as artistic director of the venue, which originated as a 1981 conversion of a wood-store by actress Aliki Georgoulis. He described plans to use the space for the rehearsal of the play "The Righteous" and to open the stage to young creators tackling social reality under neo-capitalism. From December through May, the theatre will provide free workshops for actors, host lectures on political theatre, and present a tribute to Alexander Panagoulis.
Kakleas recalled his long collaborations with actors such as Eleni Rantu, Vasilis Charalambopoulos, Ari Serbetalis and Panos Vlachos, and his roots in the 22-year collective Techno-Space, which he says still informs his work. He emphasized a commitment to collective, non-commercial theatre and rejected the pursuit of sold-out productions.
