Giant Ice Island the Size of Manhattan Breaks Off Greenland Glacier

Researchers from the University of Ottawa reported that a massive slab of the Peterman Glacier split off, forming an ice island comparable to Manhattan.

A collaborative research group from the University of Ottawa announced that a large fragment of Greenland's Peterman Glacier, extending over 45 miles, has fractured and drifted away, producing an ice island comparable in area to Manhattan and nearly 500 feet thick. This breakup marks the most substantial reduction in floating ice observed since 2012. The Department of Geography, which has monitored the glacier's behavior since 2019, had warned that such a split was imminent and expects further calving events that could shrink the glacier by about 22 percent.

The discovery offers scientists a rare chance to study glacier fragmentation, its influence on ocean conditions, and related polar hazards. NASA estimates that the Greenland ice sheet is losing roughly 150 to 180 gigatons of ice each year.
