Giant Manhattan-sized iceberg calves from Greenland's Petermann Glacier
On August 4 a 76-square-kilometre ice slab detached from Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland, forming an iceberg about the size of Manhattan.
Satellite radar from ESA's Copernicus Sentinel-1 observed rapid crack propagation across Petermann Glacier's floating tongue, culminating in the release of a 76-sq km, up to 150-metre-thick ice island on August 4. This is the glacier's most substantial calving since 2012 and the largest Arctic event of its kind since 2020. An international team, funded by ESA's FutureEO ARCTEX project and including researchers from the University of Ottawa, Universities of Stirling, Lancaster and Leeds, and the Canadian Ice Service, had been tracking growing fractures for months.
They warn that two more ice masses, about 97 and 87 sq km, may still break away as rifts expand. The iceberg, roughly Manhattan-sized, will be monitored via satellite, aerial surveys and tracking data to assess its drift, fragmentation and possible hazards to shipping routes. Canadian authorities are already evaluating navigation risks, while scientists see the event as a rare chance to study Arctic ice island dynamics and their influence on glacier behavior, sea-level rise and ocean conditions.
