Giant Petermann Glacier Ice Island Passes Joe Island Unscathed After August Calving

A massive iceberg that broke off Greenland's Petermann Glacier in early August drifted toward Nares Strait, collided with Joe Island and remained largely intact.

In early August, the Petermann Glacier on Greenland’s northwest coast shed a tabular iceberg roughly the size of St. Thomas, the largest calving event recorded since 2020. Doctoral student Adam Garbo of the University of Ottawa spotted the 76 square kilometer ice island in Sentinel-1 imagery and reported that it was thinner than expected, at under 150 meters thick. The berg traveled southward at about 3 km per day, monitored by Mauri Pelto of Nichols College using Landsat data, and on August 23-24 collided with Joe Island at the fjord’s entrance.

Unlike earlier impacts that broke the ice apart, this encounter left the iceberg largely whole, though scientists expect it to fragment over time due to tides, currents and melting as it moves through Nares Strait. The drift of such large ice islands can affect marine navigation and introduce fresh water into the ocean, highlighting the broader implications for sea-level rise and Arctic stability.

The iceberg’s behavior shows how Greenland’s glaciers contribute to sea-level change and maritime hazards.
