Giants lock backup quarterback Jameis Winston into two-year, $13 million deal
The New York Giants have extended backup quarterback Jameis Winston with a two-year contract worth $13 million, keeping him through 2028.
According to an insider, the New York Giants signed backup quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year, $13 million extension that will keep him under contract through the 2028 season while freeing up salary-cap room this year. Winston, 32, entered the final year of a prior two-year, $8 million deal and has moved up to the No. 2 spot behind starter Russell Wilson and rookie Jaxson Dart. In addition to serving as a ready-made replacement, he is expected to mentor the younger quarterback and contribute to the team’s leadership council.
The move gives head coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy an experienced option should Dart be unavailable. Winston, a former No. 1 overall pick in 2015 and Heisman Trophy winner, is now in his 12th NFL season after stints with the Buccaneers, Saints and Browns.
