Giants receiver Calvin Austin III taken off field with serious knee injury

In a training-camp session, Giants receiver Calvin Austin III suffered an apparent major injury to his right knee while running a one-on-one drill with cornerback Deonte Banks, leading trainers to cart him off the field. The surrounding wide receivers and defensive backs gathered in a prayer circle as the incident unfolded, and owner John Mara stopped to check on him. Austin, 27, had recently signed a one-year contract worth up to $4.5 million after replacing Wan’Dale Robinson, who left for the Tennessee Titans.

He arrived from a three-year stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he posted 84 catches for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns. If his recovery is prolonged, the Giants may consider Odell Beckham Jr. for the slot position he was slated to fill.
