Gilgit-Baltistan police thwart armed assault on mountain checkpost
Gilgit-Baltistan police said they repelled a gun attack by about nine terrorists on a seasonal checkpost near the Diamer-Ghizer border.
On Saturday, a group of roughly nine terrorists opened fire on a police party stationed at the Sargah Nallah seasonal checkpost, located between Diamer and Ghizer districts in Gilgit-Baltistan. The Gilgit-Baltistan police spokesperson reported that officers responded swiftly, sustaining no casualties, and that the gunmen fled by exploiting the mountainous landscape. In reaction, the police announced plans to relocate the checkpoint to a more secure and strategically advantageous position, as well as to increase personnel, logistics, and equipment.
The spokesperson condemned the “cowardly terrorist attack” and called on citizens to immediately report any suspicious behavior. The incident follows a recent anti-terror operation in April that saw 15 suspects arrested and the renaming of the Counter-Terrorism Department to the Counter-Terrorism Unit, along with recruitment of 600 new officers.
