Gironde fire aftermath: thousands of claims filed as many homes face permanent loss

The Gironde prefecture convened officials to address compensation for victims of the Saumos wildfire, which destroyed 252 structures. Insurers are processing thousands of claims, but some homeowners lack adequate coverage.

In response to the Saumos wildfire that swept through Gironde, the prefecture assembled the main agencies responsible for assisting those impacted. The fire reduced 252 buildings to ashes, including many private houses. France Assureurs reports a surge of claims, with the majority relating to residential properties, alongside requests for vehicle and commercial losses.

Compensation will be evaluated case by case based on the specific policies held by victims. Some claimants are poorly insured, such as businesses whose actual assets far exceed the declared coverage, and households with short-term relocation clauses. France Assureurs said it will review each application individually to determine appropriate payouts. The situation leaves numerous families facing the prospect that their homes may never be rebuilt.

Why it matters
