Gironde seeks state reimbursement for emergency costs after massive July wildfire
The Gironde department asked the French state to cover the emergency expenses it incurred following the July wildfire that devastated large swaths of forest.
A wildfire that started on 22 July in Saumos caused extensive damage across the Gironde region, prompting the departmental authorities to spend on urgent measures such as road repairs, infrastructure reinforcement, psychological counseling, meal provision and relocation assistance for victims. President Jean-Luc Gleyze announced that the department is requesting the French state to reimburse these emergency outlays, arguing that its current fiscal situation cannot absorb the costs alone.
Finance vice-president Corinne Martinez added that this spending follows earlier expenditures related to severe storms the previous month. In response, regional prefect Sophie Brocas confirmed that the state will extend assistance, including covering the costs of additional fire-fighting resources and allocating funds for investments in the hardest-hit communes. The department had previously been able to fund such emergencies but now faces a budget deficit deemed excessive for the 2025 fiscal year.
