GKN Aerospace to offer up to $100 million compensation to evacuated Garden Grove residents
GKN Aerospace has agreed to provide as much as $100 million to people displaced by a May chemical leak at its Garden Grove plant.
On May 21 a pressurized tank holding about 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate at GKN Aerospace’s Garden Grove site began to overheat, causing fire officials to warn of a potential explosion or large spill. The incident forced between 13,000 and 17,000 households across six neighboring cities to evacuate for five days. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced a settlement that requires GKN Aerospace to pay up to $100 million in reimbursements for expenses such as hotel stays, meals, transportation and lost wages, administered by an independent third party.
An additional $3 million has been contributed to a relief fund that has already reached its applicant limit. The company has decommissioned the faulty tank and halted production of F-35 canopies, with a possible restart on Sept. 28 pending full compliance with safety standards and a court-approved plan. GKN Aerospace said claim submissions could start this fall and payments would follow swiftly.
