Glasgow City Council to dismiss all non-teaching staff over new pay scheme

After talks with Unison fell apart, Glasgow City Council said it has no choice but to dismiss all non-teaching staff and re-engage them under a new pay and grading framework, with letters to be sent next week and contracts effective Jan. 1. The council argues the scheme ends unequal pay and will keep salaries steady or raise them for about 90% of employees, though it will raise the total pay bill. GMB and Unite have urged the council to formally table the offer so members can vote, warning that a "fire and rehire" approach would proceed without the additional £110 million they seek.

Unison declined to put the deal to its members, leaving the council to move forward. Teachers remain covered by a separate national agreement with Cosla and are not affected. The council acknowledges the distress caused by dismissal notices but says the step was unavoidable.
