Global Battery Storage Surges 66% in 2025, China Holds Nearly Half of Capacity

Battery power capacity worldwide jumped 65.8% in 2025, reaching 301.7 GW, with China accounting for about 48% of the total.

According to the Energy Institute’s 2026 Statistical Review, the world’s battery energy-storage capacity expanded by nearly 66% in 2025, climbing from 182.0 GW to 301.7 GW. China led the surge, installing 144.1 GW and contributing almost 48% of the global total, after adding 64.6 GW in a single year. The United States ranked second with 56.6 GW, reflecting a 63% year-on-year increase, while Europe collectively reached 57.7 GW and Australia doubled its capacity to 12.6 GW.

Front-of-the-meter installations now make up about three-quarters of worldwide battery power, underscoring their role as grid-scale assets rather than just residential or commercial add-ons. This growth is closely tied to the rapid expansion of solar generation, which requires storage to shift excess daytime electricity to evening peaks. Although batteries do not generate power themselves, their expanding presence is reshaping how renewable energy is integrated into electricity systems.
