Global cancer cases may rise 67% by 2050, half of deaths preventable

New ACS and IARC analysis projects a 67% increase in worldwide cancer cases by 2050, while nearly half of cancer deaths could be avoided through prevention and early detection.

Researchers from the American Cancer Society and the International Agency for Research on Cancer released a report showing that global cancer diagnoses could climb from 21 million in 2024 to 34 million by 2050, a 67% rise caused solely by demographic trends. Lung cancer leads both incidence and mortality, accounting for 13% of new cases and 19% of deaths, while breast, colorectal, liver and prostate cancers also contribute heavily to the burden.

The analysis highlights wide regional differences, with Australia/New Zealand having the highest incidence and parts of Africa the lowest, and mortality rates varying up to twofold. The authors stress that nearly half of all cancer deaths are linked to preventable risk factors such as tobacco use, infections, alcohol, obesity and inactivity, and that early detection could further cut mortality. They call for tailored national strategies to address these challenges and prioritize prevention, screening and equitable treatment access.
