Global South champions nature-based economy at Bangkok Climate Action Week

Leaders from the Global South used the Bangkok Climate Action Week to push for an economy that links growth with societal well-being and environmental protection.

During the Bangkok Climate Action Week, participants from the Global South advocated for a shift toward a nature-based economy that balances development with social welfare and ecological health. Fito Radianto of the Coalition for Earth-Centered Economy explained how Indonesian tengkawang forest supply chains and Philippine coconut agroforestry are linking producers with firms such as Forestwise and Paragon while accessing carbon financing.

The event’s panel called for coordinated action among governments, businesses and financiers, and announced an Outcome Document to showcase emerging community-led approaches. Leo Horn-Phathanothai said the document will strengthen the Global South’s voice ahead of COP31 in Turkey. Inez Stefanie used a West Java coffee one outlet’s story to stress that government infrastructure, clean energy and disaster management are essential for scaling nature-based ventures. Additional speakers highlighted regional challenges—from land rights in Latin America to energy access in Africa—and urged youth participation through platforms like Youthtopia.

Why it matters
