Global Study Finds Wide Gaps in Daily Steps Among 3- to 4-Year-Olds

Researchers measured step counts of over 3,500 preschoolers in 44 countries, finding a median of 18,500 steps per day but huge variation across regions and income levels.

An extensive study published in Lancet Child & Adolescent Health tracked step activity of over 3,500 preschool children across 44 nations using scientifically validated hip-worn devices, including only days with a minimum of ten hours of recording. The median daily count was 18,500 steps, yet individual totals ranged dramatically—from under 1,100 steps for the lowest-performing 3% to over 29,000 steps for the highest-performing 3%.

Kids from low-income countries walked about 5,200 steps more per day than those in high-income nations, and rural children logged roughly 2,000 steps more than urban peers. Boys averaged 1,000-1,600 steps more than girls, a gap the authors attribute partly to sociocultural factors. While the researchers caution against using 18,500 steps as a universal target, they propose developing context-specific reference curves to help parents gauge their child’s activity level.
