Global tributes mark John Coltrane's centenary with concerts, releases and museum plans
Celebrations of John Coltrane’s 100th birthday include live performances of A Love Supreme, new reissues and plans to open his Long Island home to the public.
Marking the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth, a series of events are unfolding worldwide. Irish bassist Ronan Guilfoyle will perform the entire A Love Supreme suite in Limerick on September 23 and in Dublin on September 24 as part of the city’s jazz festival. Later, an all-star quintet headed by Joe Lovano and featuring Melissa Aldana, Nduduzo Makhathini, Linda May Han Oh and Jeff “Tain” Watts will present a comprehensive Coltrane program at Dublin’s National Concert Hall in November.
The Coltrane 100 initiative is also issuing new albums, a photography volume and a biography of Alice Coltrane, while preparations continue to open the couple’s Long Island home to the public for the first time. These activities underscore the enduring influence of Coltrane’s music across jazz, rock, hip-hop and beyond.
