GLP-1 drugs show promise for heart, kidney, joint and other health issues

Research indicates that GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide may improve cardiovascular, renal, joint, liver, respiratory, mental and skin health beyond weight loss.

A growing body of evidence suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists provide health advantages that extend well beyond weight reduction. In a Lancet-published study, semaglutide lowered the incidence of heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular mortality among overweight patients with established heart disease, independent of weight change. The STEP 9 trial found that the drug eased knee osteoarthritis pain and enhanced mobility, while the FLOW trial demonstrated a 24% reduction in serious kidney events and cardiovascular death in type-2 diabetics with chronic kidney disease.

Separate research reported improvements in liver inflammation and scarring in patients with MASH, fewer asthma and COPD exacerbations, and observational data linking semaglutide to reduced substance-related and mood disorders. A JAMA Dermatology trial showed that adding tirzepatide to psoriasis therapy improved skin clearance in overweight adults. Scientists note that the mechanisms may involve anti-inflammatory actions, but further studies are needed to separate drug effects from weight loss benefits.
