GM to bring eyes-off autonomous tech to pickups, crossovers and large SUVs
General Motors announced that its upcoming “eyes-off” autonomous system, first slated for the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ, will later be offered in light-duty pickups, crossovers and large SUVs.
General Motors unveiled plans to extend its forthcoming “eyes-off” autonomous driving feature, which will debut in the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ, to include pickup trucks, crossovers and large SUVs. The system will first allow drivers to look away from the road on highways, then gradually cover additional routes. Sterling Anderson said the long-term goal is a “mission mode” that lets cars perform tasks such as grocery pickup or laundry delivery without anyone inside.
To support this, GM is building a unified computing architecture and introducing the OnStar AI Assistant, expected in the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq and later in other models. The company also highlighted privacy controls, optional data sharing, and continued human OnStar support for emergencies. Analysts estimate the digital services could boost GM’s revenue from $3.2 billion this year to $9.6 billion by 2036.
Why it matters
The expansion signals GM’s shift toward software-driven revenue and could reshape how consumers use personal vehicles.
