Gmail's spam filters may have blocked millions in Republican campaign donations

Security researcher Brian Krebs highlighted that emails containing WinRed donation URLs were caught by spam filters at roughly four times the rate of ActBlue messages in late July 2025. A working paper by Cameron Ellis of the University of Iowa and Lars Powell of the University of Alabama documented that when Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo diverted WinRed-linked mail to spam for 78 days, first-time Republican donations dropped nearly 75%, with a separate Outlook incident reducing inbox placement from about 88% to 16% and causing an 83% decline.

Together, these episodes eliminated roughly 142,000 potential donations. The researchers note the data cannot separate technical reputation factors from partisan intent, but stress that the sheer influence of a few mailbox providers creates a governance problem. They recommend that any change affecting payment-processor emails be disclosed to senders and reviewed by a neutral auditor. The piece concludes that relying on private infrastructure to decide which political appeals reach voters is a matter of faith, not policy.
