Goa government petitions Supreme Court to upgrade Tarun Tejpal's sentence to life
The Goa administration has approached the Supreme Court, asking that former Tehelka chief Tarun Tejpal's ten-year term be increased to life imprisonment.
Following a conviction by the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court, the state of Goa filed an appeal in the Supreme Court seeking a harsher penalty for Tarun Tejpal. The government argues that the ten-year term does not reflect the seriousness of the sexual assault case. It also warned that delays should not benefit the offender or undermine justice for the victim.
Why it matters
The case could set a precedent for how sexual assault convictions are sentenced in India.
