Gold Range Rover crashes into Howden's historic market cross
A gold-painted Range Rover struck the Grade II-listed market cross in Howden, East Yorkshire, leaving the vehicle perched on the ruined monument and injuring a passer-by.
At approximately 10:30 am on Thursday, a gold-coloured Range Rover crashed into the historic market cross situated in Howden's Market Place, East Yorkshire, causing the monument to collapse and the vehicle to sit on its remnants. A pedestrian was taken to hospital with injuries after the incident. Councillor David Howard, who was at home nearby, arrived at the scene and described the cross as being in a "real mess," noting the need to determine ownership before deciding on restoration, repair or replacement.
Historic England records indicate that while the base of the cross is medieval, the 5-metre-high shaft was installed in 1909 and the structure holds Grade II listed status. Howard praised the fire service's response and warned that the accident could have been far worse. Humberside Police confirmed officers were on site and advised drivers to avoid the area while the incident was being dealt with.
