Golden retriever’s blood donation spotlights growing need for canine donors in Australia
A three-year-old golden retriever named Bruno donated blood at a South Australian clinic, illustrating the rising demand for dog donors.
At the Millicent and Kingston Veterinary Clinic on the Limestone Coast, three-year-old golden retriever Bruno provided a life-saving blood transfusion for a fellow dog, highlighting a growing need for canine donors. Co-director Sarah McGrath explained the practice is compiling a roster of fit, healthy dogs over 25 kg because fresh donations are essential and do not store well. The donation process involved light sedation, a quick draw, and the donor received treats and praise afterward.
Red Cross Lifeblood estimates one donation can rescue up to four dogs, while specialist Stephanie Leeder points out that in critical situations dogs may even donate to cats via xenotransfusion. Veterinary clinics nationwide are establishing donor registries and blood banks to address a supply shortfall that currently outweighs demand.
