Google adds AI-powered book interaction to Gemini Notebook with new Expert Intelligence feature

Google introduced Expert Intelligence for its Gemini Notebook AI note-taking app, enabling the import of purchased Google Play Books so users can interrogate the material and generate derivative outputs such as recipes, infographics, or AI-driven podcasts. During a briefing, Steven Johnson showed the feature applied to Michael Pollan's Food Rules to produce a recipe collection and to Kim Scott's Radical Candor to answer workplace-communication queries.

More than 100,000 books from publishers like Penguin Random House, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan Publishers and O’Reilly Media will be compatible, while fifteen authors, including Pollan, Scott, Steven Pinker and Jennifer Wallace, have created custom Featured Notebooks. The app displays full text of supported books, but shared notebooks hide content from users who have not bought the title, directing them to purchase it. Google plans to extend the capability to AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and eventually to scholarly articles, magazines and newspapers.
