Google adds breathing emergency alerts to Pixel Watch 5 and older models

Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 with a new Breathing Emergency Detection feature that can summon emergency services when oxygen levels drop, initially rolling out in select EU markets.

Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 alongside its new Pixel 11 phones, highlighting a Breathing Emergency Detection function that leverages a PPG sensor, accelerometer and barometer to spot sustained drops in oxygen saturation and trigger an emergency call with location data. Product manager Francis Hoe explained the on-device AI runs without cloud assistance, but the feature lacks FDA clearance, so it will debut only in certain European Union markets.

The same detection will be enabled on the Pixel Watch 4, while blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trend monitoring will arrive via the Google Health app for Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices later in the year. Senior director Sandeep Waraich said the company’s long-term focus on heart-rate accuracy made these advanced health signatures possible. Google groups these tools under a “Health Guardian” umbrella that also includes irregular rhythm alerts and sleep-breathing quality monitoring, offering monthly reports and an AI health coach for users. The American Heart Association noted that while cuff-less wrist devices are not yet standard for blood-pressure diagnosis, they show promise for future hypertension care.
