Google adds conversational Gemini to Apple CarPlay for US drivers

Google has enabled its Gemini AI assistant in Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, starting with users in the United States.

After a year of development, Google is extending its Gemini AI assistant to Apple CarPlay, beginning with United States users. The new capability integrates into Google Maps, where a Gemini icon on the car’s infotainment screen activates voice-driven navigation. Users can pose complex queries—like asking for points of interest and then receiving directions that avoid toll roads—without taking their hands off the wheel.

Google describes the feature as a conversational way to report traffic disruptions and locate stops on the go. While the rollout will eventually reach other regions, the company has not yet confirmed whether CarPlay users will receive the same personalization options announced for Android Auto. No further details on the timeline have been provided.

Why it matters

It brings advanced AI-driven, hands-free navigation to iPhone users, expanding Google’s reach across major mobile platforms.
