Google adds Gemini-powered scam alerts and privacy tools to Android

Google is rolling out new Android features that use Gemini AI to flag deceptive messages and protect privacy, starting with an opt-in setting in Messages.

Google announced a suite of new security enhancements for Android, centered on an opt-in Scam Detection feature in the Messages app that employs Gemini AI to evaluate whether a text may be a scam. The system processes messages in a secure, encrypted compute space, ensuring that even Google cannot read the content. Gemini Nano will additionally perform on-device checks of URLs to confirm safety before users tap them.

Initially available on Pixel 10+ devices, the feature will also be supported on upcoming Samsung Galaxy S26, Z Flip and Fold 8 models and other selected handsets. Google is also updating screen-sharing privacy on Android 15 devices and introducing call-forwarding protection to block unauthorized forwarding codes. Partnerships with banks in Brazil will enable verification of incoming calls to curb bank-impersonation scams.

Why it matters

The updates give Android users stronger defenses against phishing and privacy breaches directly on their phones.
