Google adds option to hide visible watermarks on AI-generated media

Google will let users turn off the visible watermark on AI-created images, videos and songs, while keeping invisible tracking marks active.

Google revealed that users will soon be able to disable the visible watermark that appears on AI-generated content, including pictures, video clips and audio tracks. The option will be available for the Nano Banana, Omni and Lyria models within Gemini, as well as in the Flow video editing tool, with Search support slated for a later rollout. Despite the change, the company will continue to embed invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA-standard metadata to ensure content can still be identified.

Settings to control the visible mark will be found under Settings > Media Watermark. Additionally, Google is releasing an open-source library named Credentio so developers can embed local validation in their applications. The update mirrors recent discussions about watermarking AI output, notably Anthropic’s decision to add watermarks to Claude’s text and files.

Why it matters

It gives creators more flexibility while maintaining tools for detecting AI-generated media.
