Google automatically links phone numbers to every Google account on Android devices
Google now auto-assigns the device’s phone number to all Google accounts logged in on an Android phone, unless users disable the feature.
Google has introduced a default setting that automatically checks and links the phone’s active number to all Google accounts signed in on an Android device, covering primary, secondary, and work profiles. The change, documented in a support article updated in August 2025, triggers verification without explicit user consent, though an email notification may be sent to inform the user. Recipients of such emails have reported the automatic association of their number across multiple accounts.
Users retain the ability to disable the feature by navigating to Settings → Google → All services → Privacy and security → Phone number verification, where they can also remove an already linked number. This adjustment aims to enhance account security but raises privacy concerns among Android users.
Why it matters
Automatic phone-number linking affects privacy and security for all Android users with multiple Google accounts.
