Sergey Brin, despite lacking a formal title at Google, has spent months urging DeepMind engineers to double down on the Gemini project and catch up with competitors. After a town-hall in April where he called for faster progress, the pressure intensified, and on August 5 the company revealed a major overhaul of its AI division. Founder Demis Hassabis relinquished the chief executive role, becoming chair and Alphabet chief scientist, while his deputy Koray Kavukcuoglu now makes final decisions on DeepMind matters.
The restructuring also moves several support groups out of DeepMind into Google’s broader reporting lines, effectively shifting AI governance from the London office to Mountain View. Gemini’s rollout has been delayed twice, missing three release windows, partly due to limited computing resources and internal disagreements. Brin’s informal influence includes steering resources toward self-improving AI, a focus that has drawn attention within the lab. The announcement caused Alphabet’s shares to dip about 5 %.
