Google expands Quick Share with tap-to-share mode for Android devices
Google introduced a tap-to-share upgrade to its Quick Share feature, letting Android phones exchange contacts, photos and videos by simply touching them.
During the Pixel 11 product announcement, Google announced a new version of its Quick Share feature that enables instant, two-way exchanges when two Android phones are placed close together. The upgrade allows the transfer of contact information, photos, videos and other files with a simple tap, either directly or via the phone’s Share Sheet. Google says the functionality mirrors Apple’s recent NameDrop feature in iOS 17.
The rollout begins on Wednesday for Pixel 6 and later devices, and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8 will receive the update shortly. Additional Android devices are slated to gain compatibility before the end of the year, bringing the Pixel ecosystem closer to iPhone parity in quick file sharing.
Why it matters
The update makes sharing files between Android phones as easy as a tap, improving user convenience and competition with Apple.
